Herzog Offers a Way to Reach a Judicial Reform Compromise

By 02/03/2023 9:40 AMNo CommentsBy YidInfo Staff

President Isaac Herzog, the grandson of the former Chief Rabbi of Israel, is said to have proposed a strategy to find a compromise on judicial reforms, according to Channel 12, the top TV station in Israel.

The legislation will be suspended for 14 days, as per the plan. During this time, all parties’ representatives will participate in the negotiations on both sides without any restrictions. Two possibilities were set up: a joint committee to speed things along and discussions through an established team.

The proposal’s premise is that, if things go smoothly, it will be feasible to forward legislation by the agreements made; alternatively, since the Knesset’s winter conference will expire in exactly two months, current legislation can move forward.

The President’s Residence replied to the report by saying:

“For several weeks, the President of the State has been attempting to avert a constitutional crisis and decrease the widening of the nation’s rifts. The President’s Residence is currently being used as a dialogue center that successfully upholds the parties’ confidence in it as a haven for conversations amid the issue while keeping the participants’ discretion.

“As part of this, meetings have been held at the President’s Residence, including by the President, every day for the past few weeks – meetings with all political factions, including research institutions and various organizations, to establish a negotiated mechanism that will enable a resolution to the crisis while upholding the core values of the State of Israel as a Jewish and democratic state and maintaining the unity of the people.

There must be negotiations is the appeal that resounds and arises from the gatherings and conversations held in the President’s Residence.

Forming a negotiated framework that will result in a resolution is the focus of the State President’s time and effort.
