
In a horrific accident that occurred late Monday night, Rav Yidel Weinstock z”l, the Gabbai of the Satmar Rebbe, was tragically killed in the ensuing fiery inferno.
The accident happened around 1:30 a.m. on the NY State Thruway when Reb Yiddel’s car was struck by a vehicle traveling north in the southbound lane between Exit 16 and Exit 15A.
Several vehicles were involved in the accident, one exploding into flames. The driver of the wrong-way vehicle died at the scene as well.
Hundreds of Hatzolah volunteers from Kiryas Joel and Rockland County responded to the site working with the fire department for over 40 minutes to extricate the victims. Hatzoloh transported one accident victim in critical condition to the hospital.
Rav Weinstock (68), a Williamsburg resident, had long served the Satmar Rebbes and was a staunch defender of Satmar institutions. He also served as the Gabbai Tzedakah of Kolel Shomrei Hachomos and contributed significantly to several Satmar charitable organizations. A few years ago, he had a Sefer Torah written and delivered to the Satmar Beis Midrash in Williamsburg.
Rav Weinstock was returning from a gathering in Bloomingburg and a visit to be menachem avel the Skverer Rebbe in Shikun Skver. He was returning to Bloomingburg to pick up his car when the tragedy occurred.
His sons R’ Yitzchok, R’ Mayer, R’ Bentzion, and R’ Shimon survive him, as do his daughters and sons-in-law R’ Yaakov Yosef Mehring, R’ Chaim Elimelech Blumenberg, and R’ Yoel Hirsch.
