During the recent operation in Jenin, several IDF members from the Druze and Bedouin populations recorded themselves assisting the city’s citizens. In their IDF uniforms, the soldiers said, “G-d loves Jenin, damn Israel.”
The Israeli news sites reported that the soldiers are not in custody and will continue to perform their duties until the internal IDF investigation is finished.
The IDF claimed it had arrested the soldiers seen in the video Tuesday evening and would give them a “severe disciplinary punishment” for their actions.
The legal defense team for the IDF asserted that the video had been “selectively edited” and that the troops had also expressed support for the actions taken by the IDF.
“The fickle soldiers who were documented praising Jenin and Palestine and defaming the state of Israel were arrested and will be interrogated,” MK Almog Cohen (Jewish Force) said in response to the troops’ detention. I am confident they will receive a just punishment and be swiftly dismissed from the IDF.
Israeli law requires Druze to enlist in the IDF, while Bedouin are not required by law to do so and can do so voluntarily.
