According to an IDF investigation, a soldier who perished during the raid in Jenin last month was killed by „friendly fire”.
On July 4, while forces were leaving Samaria City after a demanding two-day counterterrorism operation, Chief Sgt. David Yehuda Yitzchak was shot.
A gunshot wound to the 23-year-old non-commissioned officer from the Egoz commando unit was treated there before being sent to the hospital, where he was later declared dead.
The IDF investigation found that Yitzchak was accidentally shot by other Israeli commandos, as he was securing the beginning of the military pullout in a narrow passageway in the city’s refugee camp.
During a gunfight with Palestinian terrorists, shooting took place. In one of the buildings, „a force identified a suspicious figure and suspicious movements, and fired at it,” the report said.
The examination uncovered „gaps“ in how the soldiers were positioned when they left the camp. The 89th Oz Brigade, also known as the Commando Brigade, and made up entirely of infantry special operations troops, received discipline, according to the army.
IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi described the „friendly fire” event as „difficult and unfortunate” after examining the investigation’s results. „Egoz conducted operations in the Jenin refugee camp in a valiant and commendable manner, resulting in operational successes and extending the IDF’s range of maneuverability.
Along with that, we’ll make the appropriate deductions and put them into practice in the fighting troops, „Halevi said. The investigation’s conclusions wurden revealed to Yitzchak’s relatives.
