According to the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), a grenade exploded late Saturday night at a military training base in the Jordan Valley, killing one Israeli soldier and injuring three others badly.
The event happened between Saturday and Sunday at around midnight in the Kfir Brigade training base’s housing area in the Jordan Valley, close to the Ro’i settlement.
An unidentified soldier died at the site, and the other soldiers were transferred to hospitals for treatment.
The other people had minor injuries, while one was in critical condition.
Initial investigations indicated that the soldier had violated IDF protocol by bringing what he believed to be a dud grenade back from the firing zone and keeping it in his bag; the grenade later exploded.
If necessary, the IDF military police will decide whether to file criminal charges against the soldier after continuing their investigation.
After a soldier was murdered in early January by a weapon that was accidentally discharged at the Anatot base, this was the second fatal IDF accident in 2023.
A soldier was slightly hurt last week in a training accident in southern Israel. At the Tzeelim base in the Negev, a soldier was shot during training exercises.
