
One of the three members of Congress who will make opening statements at a U.S. event is Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.), who has equated boycotts of Israel with Nazi Germany. Yom Hazikaron, Israel’s Memorial Day for Fallen Soldiers and Terror Victims, an event sponsored by the Commission on International Religious Freedom.
According to an event listing on Twitter, the USCIRF was scheduled to present its 2023 annual report on April 25. The congressman and her two colleagues are no longer mentioned on the schedule for the event, which is now scheduled for May 1.
Omar was not listed on the website when JNS asked why she was chosen as a speaker, given her history of antisemitic remarks. A spokesperson for the commission, a branch of the federal government, who did not give her name, directed JNS to the page, “including a list of speakers on our website.”
Omar’s senior advisor, Jeremy Slevin, referred to JNS’s assertion that he was no longer a speaker as “false” in response.
He added, “Sorry to break your bubble, but this news is fake. “Rep. Like Sen. Rubio, Omar will speak virtually at the event. Rep. Jim McGovern (D-Mass.) and Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) were the other two.

The event’s moderator is still identified as Rabbi David Saperstein, director emeritus of the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism, who JNS could not reach through many different ways.
Rubio’s spokesperson, Laura Ortiz, told JNS that although the senator would not be present in person, he would record remarks in advance. She directed inquiries to USCIRF. Not the senator, she continued, “They organize the event.”
