Mayor Eric Adams has unveiled a new idea to have illegal immigrants in New York City be housed in areas of religion as part of his latest sanctuary strategy.
Approximately 1,000 so-called “asylum seekers” are anticipated to be housed in the program, with room for growth.
No matter what religion you follow, helping those in need is a fundamental component of all spiritual traditions, according to Adams.
“As we continue to address this humanitarian crisis, I’m proud that New York City’s faith community will be able to offer shelter to asylum seekers in need at places of worship throughout the five boroughs thanks to this new partnership with New York Disaster Interfaith Services.”
In the five boroughs, 50 houses of worship will start housing “migrants” beginning in the next month, according to Adams.
Due to President Biden’s open border policy, the city is currently dealing with a significant influx of migrants due to this news.
Asylum seekers can stay the night because of a two-year cooperation between the city and New York Disaster Interfaith Services.
Although it is unclear if local communities are searching for these connections, Mayor Adams underlined that this project would help asylum seekers and local communities connect.
The mayor claims that this is a better environment for immigrants compared to some of the other possibilities.
“I would rather people be in houses of worship, where they are connected to people, community, care, and compassion, than being in a congregate setting that is not connected to those things,” he declared.
According to the mayor’s office, the overnight centers would provide “a full range of services, including dining and social areas, shower facilities, meals, storage space, and more.”
