Wednesday morning saw the arrival of US Vice President Joe Biden in Israel for a brief visit during which he will meet with Israeli political and military leaders and support Israel as it continues its conflict with Hamas in Gaza.

Prime Minister Netanyahu and President Herzog greeted Biden at the airport, and Biden gave Netanyahu a hearty embrace. Later, he and Netanyahu held a press conference together.

The world is watching, said Biden, adding that “it’s not the example of our power, it’s the power of our example.” Israel shares the same set of values as the United States and other democracies, and they are watching to see what we will do.

I’m extremely glad to be back in Israel with you, and I appreciate you having me,” Biden continued, turning to face Netanyahu. It will be interesting to debate in detail where everyone goes from here.

He declared in his address to the Israeli people that “their fortitude, their dedication, and their bravery are astounding, truly stunning. I am honored to be here.

Biden emphasized that 31 Americans were among the “slaughtered” victims of Hamas. “They have committed evils and atrocities that make ISIS look somewhat more rational,” he said. “Hamas does not speak for all Palestinians and has only brought suffering to them.” He emphasized that the US will make sure Israel has the means necessary for self-defense.

The incident that occurred at the hospital in Gaza yesterday “deeply saddened and outraged me,” Biden continued.

He officially supported Israel’s account of the incident by saying, “From what I’ve seen, it appears it was done by the other team and not you.” Nevertheless, he continued, “There are a lot of people out there who are not sure.”
