12 people were killed and 19 others were hurt when a passenger bus went off the road and crashed into a roadside ditch in central Turkey on Monday, according to officials.
According to Governor Mehmet Ali Ozkan, the bus driver lost control of the vehicle, which crossed across the opposing lane before crashing into a ditch not far from the city of Yozgat in the center of Turkey.
The bus was making its way to Istanbul from Sivas, which is located about 240 kilometers (150 miles) east of Yozgat.
Ozkan claimed that 11 of the passengers passed away at the scene of the collision, and one passed away later in the hospital.
One of the injured passengers was in serious condition and was receiving treatment in one of the neighboring hospitals, he said.
According to Ozkan, the cause of the collision is still being looked into, but it appears that the driver’s “carelessness” was the cause.
