Police in Sri Lanka said that a big tree fell on a state-run bus in the middle of the city of Colombo on Friday, crushing five passengers to death.
Nine more people were extricated from the rubble and taken to a hospital, where their conditions were recorded as stable.
At the time, there were roughly 20 people on board. According to a police officer who spoke to AFP, “the bus had stopped at the Kollupitiya stand to pick up more passengers when the tree crashed on it.”
On average, seven people are killed on Sri Lanka’s roadways every day. 2,536 people died in traffic accidents across the island nation last year.
