A police water cannon viciously attacked an elderly couple in Jerusalem on Sunday. The pair did nothing wrong; they were simply bystanders in the vicinity of an extremist protest.
A disturbing video of the pair being thrown to the ground by a police riot-dispersal water cannon was shared on Twitter.
The couple is pictured on the side of the road, somewhat far from where the Jerusalem Faction was protesting the arrest of a yeshiva student just before Rosh Hashanah.
The cannon started spraying the pair standing by the side of the road. The older man and his wife were hurt as they were thrown to the ground by the force of the stream.
“From the clip, it would appear that the use of the water cannon, in this situation, calls for an in-depth inquiry,” Israel Police said in a statement. The situation will be evaluated and correctly handled, and the protocol for using water cannons will be modified.
In response to the event, MK Mossi Raz of the Meretz Party, which has been vocal in its opposition to police brutality, called for a stop to the practice.
“Shocking violence by police officers, there is no justification for such use of a water cannon. I demand that the Public Security Committee be convened to end the violent use of a water cannon,” Raz tweeted.
פשוט בושה וחרפה pic.twitter.com/0oRYMMStOQ
