After accusing the popular video-sharing app of “causing addiction” among children and harming their mental health, Kyrgyzstan said on Wednesday that it intended to outlaw TikTok.

The culture ministry of the Central Asian nation said in a statement that it had received “frequent messages” from organizations expressing worry about the app’s “harmful effects.

It should be mentioned that TikTok immerses users in a virtual world made up of brief videos. Teenagers attempt to reproduce various videos, some of which are life-threatening, after watching them, it was claimed.
Additionally, it stated that the app failed to filter out content that was “harmful to the health and development of children.

An inquiry for comment from TikTok did not immediately receive a response. Due to the potential harm social media could do to minors, many nations, notably the UK and France, have sought to tighten regulations on it.

However, Kyrgyzstan has additionally been under fire recently for its attempts to control independent media, which rights organizations claim amounts to a growing infringement on the right to free speech.

With almost one billion monthly users, TikTok has been banned in India and has been subject to limitations in other nations for allegedly violating data standards. Due to the app’s connections to China, it has also been under intense Western scrutiny. ByteDance, its owner, is Chinese.
