Iran Conducts Military Drill Near Strategic Strait Of Hormuz

State TV reported that the Iranian military began its yearly exercise on Friday in the crucial Strait of Hormuz and along the Gulf of Oman coast, even as the government continues to repress anti-government demonstrations that have been going on for more than three months.

A fifth of all oil sold at sea passes through the strait, which is at the mouth of the Persian Gulf and is vital to the world’s energy resources.

According to the TV report, drones, fighter jets, helicopters, military transport aircraft, and submarines will also participate in the wargames, known as “Zolfaghar-1401,” along with commandos and airborne soldiers.

The military of Iran would also launch missiles and air defense systems, it was claimed.

According to the TV, the exercises are intended to “improve readiness in confronting external threats and any potential invasion.”

Such exercises are regularly held in Iran to hone its defense capabilities and test new weaponry.

Anti-government demonstrations have rocked Iran since mid-September. The death of a woman who was being held by the nation’s morality police set them off.

The demonstrations quickly turned into demands for an end to the nation’s more than 40 years of clerical rule.
