Israel acknowledged on Monday that the US government had opened an investigation into the shooting death of Shireen Abu Akleh, an Al Jazeera journalist.
It denounced the investigation as a “terrible mistake” and vowed not to participate.
Israel has made it clear to the U.S. “that we won’t assist with any external probe,” Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz wrote on Twitter.
The 51-year-old American citizen journalist was wearing a helmet and a protective vest with the word “press” when she was shot in the occupied West Bank last May.
Palestinian officials, Abu Akleh’s family, and Al Jazeera accuse Israel of deliberately targeting and killing the woman.
