A border policeman who was accused of reckless manslaughter in the three-year-old fatal shooting of a Palestinian man with autism in Jerusalem’s Old City was exonerated by an Israeli court on Thursday.
The cop who shot and killed Eyad Hallaq, 32, was found to have been acting in self-defense by the Jerusalem district court.
The case has been compared to the American police death of George Floyd.
The cop made a split-second judgment in a potentially dangerous circumstance, according to the court, which described the episode as a terrible error.
The court declared that taking chances “is an integral part of military activity.”
Israel has long been charged by the Palestinians and human rights organizations with covering up the wrongdoings of its security personnel.
On May 30, 2020, Hallaq, 32, was tragically murdered just inside the Lion’s Gate of the Old City while en route to the special needs institution he attended.
His family had demanded stronger penalties and blasted Israel’s probe into the incident.
