In Jackson, New Jersey, home to a rising Orthodox community, the town council said it would decrease the zoning requirement for places of worship.
For instance, those who want to construct new synagogues in the area will now need a one-acre plot when prior restrictions needed two acres. Finding a plot of one acre is significantly more straightforward.
According to Rabbi Avi Schnall, the director of Agudah’s New Jersey office, “this vote is a huge step forward for religious liberty in Jackson, N.J.” Thanks to this, the expanding Orthodox community in Jackson will be able to enjoy their right to freedom of religion.
In the years to come, Schnall continued, “we look forward to working with Mayor Mike Reina on similar concerns, as he has been the driving force behind this ordinance.”
In central New Jersey, Jackson is close to Lakewood, a town with a significant haredi Jewish community and an estimated 50% of Jews overall. In search of more accessible and reasonably priced housing, young families have recently relocated to nearby communities like Jackson and Toms River.
