Jewish community leaders came out strongly to laud Representative Gregory Meeks (D-NY) Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, who has a record as a champion for Israel and the Jewish community like few others, and they condemned a recent politically-motivated smear-campaign in the press. Meeks is chairman of the House Foreign Relations Committee and has been a long-time friend and strong supporter of Israel.
During the last couple of days, when politicians are jockeying to form coalitions to elect the upcoming speakers, the NY Post paddled attacks that Meeks joined forces with socialist, anti-Israel-leaning elected officials to block Francisco Moya from becoming City Council speaker. While they might both end up on the same side on the speaker’s race, the attacks of alliance are patently untrue. Jewish community leaders came out to forcefully decry these attacks.
“I stand by our Queens County Leader, Gregory Meeks, a steadfast supporter of our community and the State of Israel,” Shimon Pelman, an Orthodox Jewish District Leader in Queens said in December 17, Press Release. “As the chair of Foreign Affairs, he has defended our State of Israel and advocates for our right to safely practice our faith while hate crimes have increased.”
It is beyond questioning that @RepGregoryMeeks is a true friend of the Jewish community and #Israel. Anyone suggesting otherwise is either misinformed or trying to divide us,” tweeted Queens Jewish Councilman Barry Grodenchik. “I thank my brother Shimi Pelman for his excellent statement which perfectly sets the record straight.”
“As the Chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee, Greg Meeks has been an unwavering supporter of Israel, speaking out when others have chosen silence,” says Bronx Congressman Ritchie Torres, staunch supporter of Israel and advocate for fighting anti-Semitism in its many lethal forms. “Any suggestion to the contrary is character assassination, pure and simple. The character assassins behind the latest hatchet pieces are doing the bidding of the pro-BDS left, which would love nothing more than to see a wedge driven between pro-Israel Democrats.”
According to sources at AIPAC, the quotes of Meeks alleged defection in the name of their organization are patently untrue. “AIPAC does not get involved in local elections,” an AIPAC source shared with YidInfo. “Accusing Chairman Meeks of being anti-Israel is patently false as his track record as a staunch supporter of Israel has been proven time and again.”
Such an alliance would be unusual as Meeks has placed himself squarely on the other side of Tiffany Cabán and the other anti-Israel council members over their radical positions to defund the NYPD and supports the anti-Israel Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement.”
The Democratic Socialists of America supports the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement against the State of Israel. The most notable DSA member in New York is Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
This past summer, Meeks led 10-person bipartisan delegation on a visit to Israel that aimed to bolster ‘diplomatic relationships.’ with the Government of Israel and the Palestinian Authority, as well as conduct oversight of US programming in the region.
