With the Society for the Reconstruction and Development of the Jewish Quarter in Jerusalem’s Old City, the Israeli Ministry of Jerusalem Affairs and Jewish Tradition agreed to invest a quarter of a billion shekels ($68 million) over the following five years.
The community has never had a budget this large. The money will be used to build infrastructure and locations over the quarter as well as host tours, activities, and performances for the general public.
The program’s objectives include the restoration and reconstruction of the Tifaret Israel Synagogue, the building of the “Wall Elevator,” which will bridge the height difference between the Jewish Quarter and the Western Wall and make the 142 steps accessible to large crowds of visitors, the physical and experiential accessibility of the Herodian Quarter and the accessibility of the ancient Broad Wall (late eighth century BCE), the development of the archaeology field, and more.
Director General Assaf Yazdi of the ministry stated, “I am excited to take a part of history and develop the most important area for the Jewish people.”
