After its longest-serving justice was revealed to hold extreme antisemitic views, calls have been made for the European Court of Human Rights, which has jurisdiction over more than 46 nations and whose decisions are binding on all 27 EU members, to revisit cases involving Jews.
Botjan Zupani, who presided over the court from 1998 to 2016, made a number of statements about Jews on social media, among them that they are „the central enemies of Western civilization”, the London-based Jewish Chronicle exclusively revealed on Thursday.
The GnasherJew X-Account was the first to learn about the recent comments, which were posted on X (formerly known as Twitter) and LinkedIn.
Zupani, who has also served as a vice president of the UN Committee Against Torture, claimed on X that German Jews were responsible for „millions of German fathers losing their income, fortune, and savings because of these Jewish banks gangsters“ and that they „introduced sexual perversions of all kinds, sadism, masochism, and lots of homosexuality“ prior to Adolf Hitler’s rise to power.
Additionally, he wrote on social media that the „Jewish war on white“ is behind the arson of the West, and unless Jewish power is named as the cancer, there is not [sic] hope for the white race.“
Zupani has been involved in a number of cases, including Cha’are Shalom ve Tsedek v. France regarding the legitimacy of kosher slaughter, PETA Deutschland v. Germany regarding Comparisons between the Holocaust and the treatment of animals, M’Bala M’Bala v. France regarding antisemitic views and free speech, as well as numerous lawsuits involving the return of Jewish property taken by Nazi Germany.
UK Lawyers for Israel’s Jonathan Turner told the JC that their group was investigating „whether any judgments of the European Court of Human Rights in which Botjan Zupani participated should be reconsidered.” In the meantime, in response to the JC’s exposé, the pro-Israel European Centre for Law and Justice, a conservative research group, expelled Zupani from their fellowship program.
Director Gregor Puppinick stated, „There should be no room for antisemitism, especially within human-rights institutions,” adding that Zupani’s „reputation was high at the court.” Diese Woche, Zupani also had a temporary lockout of his X-Account, due to the fact that his Posts violated the Policy against Hate Speech on the Website.
The Strasbourg-based European Court of Human Rights examines alleged state violations of the European Convention on Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms. State parties to the convention are required to execute judgments, since they are legally binding.
