Following a setback at the Iowa Supreme Court, Governor Kim Reynolds is convening a rare special session of the legislature at the Iowa Capitol to adopt additional abortion restrictions.
Republican Reynolds declared on Wednesday that she will convene a special session on July 11 “with the sole purpose of enacting legislation that addresses abortion and protects unborn lives.
In a statement, Reynolds stated, “I think the pro-life movement is the most significant human rights struggle of our day.
“I will continue to help women as they prepare for motherhood, promote fatherhood and parenting, and maintain policies that support strong families.
Not only will I continue to battle against the inhumanity of abortion,
Since the Iowa Supreme Court’s 3-3 tie in a significant abortion case last month, anti-abortion groups and some lawmakers have been calling for a special session.
A 2018 law that would have outlawed almost all abortions after about six weeks of pregnancy was permanently halted by a tie vote.
In both her comments and her proclamation announcing the special session, Reynolds lambasted the court’s inaction.
She argued that the state’s lawmakers and people, who won’t stop until the unborn are given legal protection, are being disregarded by their inaction.
Currently, up to 20 weeks into a pregnancy, abortion is permitted in Iowa.
