
A male lifeguard was killed and seven others injured after they were struck by a lightning at a New Jersey beach on Monday.
Berkeley Township Police Department said the incident occurred at South Seaside Park at the 21st Street beach around 4:30 in the afternoon.
In the initial police investigation, the victim was sitting on his lifeguard chair when the lightning struck.
Three other lifeguards ad four beachgoers were also hit by the lightning strike.
The injured beachgoers are a 50-year-old woman, a 51-year-old man, and a 19-year-old man.
All the injured victims are now undergoing treatment at the Community Medical Center in Toms River.
In a statement, Berkeley Township Mayor Carmen Amato expressed sadness on the incident calling it “a tragic and heartbreaking day for our town and the entire Jersey Shore.”
“On behalf of myself and the entire community, I offer our deepest condolences to the family and friends of this young man,” Amato said.
