A judge in the federal case in Washington charging the former president with attempting to change the results of the 2020 election set a trial date for Donald Trump for March 4, 2024, on Monday.
The decision from U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan turned down a defense motion to postpone the trial until April 2026, or nearly a year and a half after the 2024 presidential election, but she also delayed it from the January timeframe that had been recommended by the office of special counsel Jack Smith. „The public has a right to a prompt and efficient resolution of this matter,” she said.
If the timing is accurate, it will fall on Super Tuesday, a pivotal election day when the most delegates are at stake, right in the thick of the Republican presidential nomination season. Trump, a Republican, was charged earlier this month with planning to avenge his defeat to Democrat Joe Biden in the 2020 race in a four-count indictment.
One of the four legal actions brought against Trump is the federal election subversion prosecution. Smith’s legal team has filed a separate federal lawsuit accusing him of illegally holding onto secret materials at his Mar-a-Lago home in Palm Beach, Florida, and refusing to turn them up. Trial in that case is now scheduled on May 20.
Georgia and New York haben State Court cases pending against Trump. In connection with a hush-money-payment to a porn-actor, who claimed she had an extramarital affair with Trump, Manhattan Prosecutors have accused him of falsifying business records. Meanwhile, prosecutors in Fulton County, Georgia, have accused Trump and 18 others of participating in a racketeering conspiracy to rig the state’s 2020 election.
Trump, the early front-runner for the Republican presidential nomination in 2024, turned himself in Thursday in that case, posing for the first mug shot in American history of a former president while wearing a frowning expression.
He has asserted that the investigations into him are politically motivated and an effort to hurt his chances of retaking the presidency.
