Mayor Adams issued a new order requiring more than 100 refugees to vacate city shelters

The office of Mayor Eric Adams issued 100 letters resembling evictions to migrants who had stayed in the city’s taxpayer-funded shelters the longest.

This week, single people received the first notifications sent out under City Hall’s new 60-day shelter stay restriction, which authorities say was necessary to help make room for migrant families with children.

The people who have been in our system the longest are the ones who would initially receive notices, according to Dr. Ted Long, senior vice president of New York City Health and Hospitals.

“We’re delivering the notices on a rolling basis,” he continued. Adams has complained about the migrant shelters being crowded to the “breaking point” since last fall, despite City Hall declining to acknowledge how long these people have been residing there or reveal their whereabouts.

Since the spring of 2022, more than 93,200 migrants have landed in the Big Apple.

According to the most recent data from City Hall, over 56,200 migrants are currently living at the different city-run shelters, including over 2,900 who have just arrived in New York City.

As the city struggles to find space for the wave of asylum seekers who are still pouring in, the Big Apple is creating a sizable emergency housing facility at the Creedmoor Psychiatric Center in Queens, the administration of Mayor Eric Adams announced Wednesday.

The state-owned psychiatric facility’s parking lot will be turned into the city’s newest Humanitarian Emergency Response and Relief Center, which will serve about 1,000 single adult male migrants.

According to Anne Williams-Isom, deputy mayor for health and human services, the state provided the location for the mega-shelter and will pay New York City back for the expenditures associated with building, maintaining, and staffing the site.

She added that the city has already spent $1.5 billion on the current problem. Hochul spokesperson Maggie Halley issued a statement in which she said, “The State will continue to cooperate closely with the City to provide resources and address the situation.

The 192 emergency camps already set up to accommodate the constant flow of asylum seekers will be supplemented by the Creedmoor migrant facility, which is anticipated to be operational at some point next month.
Williams-Isom declared at a briefing on the migrant problem that “this is a humanitarian crisis unlike any in recent memory.

“New York City is still coming up with innovative ways to help asylum seekers, but we are aware that this is an unsustainable effort in the absence of a federal decompression strategy at the national level.

We will keep requesting further assistance from all levels of government as we open this space as a temporary fix.

However, a Queens politician was quick to criticize the newest migrant camp, arguing that its location will only affect food delivery services for a senior center that is situated on the same grounds as Creedmoor.

State Senator Leroy Comrie, whose constituents frequent the senior facility, said, It’s such a bad plan.”

The loading port, which is now used to deliver 500 meals to the elderly center each day, would most certainly be under the supervision of those in charge of the migrant shelter, according to his assertion.

“They can place this in another area of the grounds.

There are alternatives that won’t negatively affect the senior center, Comrie insisted. Given that the racing season is slated to begin in September and that the location has a number of problems, including poor water supply, the city has already decided against include the Aqueduct Racetrack in its list of mass shelters.

Approximately 1,500 migrants have already been transported by bus from the city to several upstate counties that have “volunteered” to host them in an effort to spread the burden.
