Early on Tuesday, while pursuing a robbery suspect, a Milwaukee police officer was fatally shot.

Police stated the suspect also passed away from a gunshot wound.

When officers arrived at the crime scene at 1:15 a.m., the suspect disobeyed their orders and escaped on foot, according to Milwaukee Police Chief Jeffrey Norman on the city’s south side. One cop then apprehended the suspect, and a struggle followed.

The weapons of both men were fired.

According to him, the injured officer, a 37-year-old man who had worked for the Milwaukee Police Department for more than four years, passed away at a hospital.

A 19-year-old Milwaukee resident who was the suspect passed away there.

According to the chief, whether the suspect passed out from the officer’s shooting or a self-inflicted gunshot wound was not immediately obvious.

Our hearts are heavy, Milwaukee. The hearts of the Milwaukee Police Department are heavy. At a press conference, Norman said, “My heart is heavy. “The brutality must end! ”

According to Norman, the shooting is still being investigated, therefore, names will not be published immediately. He claimed that both the police department and the city were in mourning.

“One of our officers, who donned the uniform and badge and reported to work yesterday night, made the ultimate sacrifice to keep our neighborhood safe. Milwaukee, we need your prayers and assistance.

To reduce gun violence and create a secure city, Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson emphasized that the entire community—not just the police—must take an active part.

The mayor stated, “It’s not only up to the men and women of the Milwaukee Police Department; it’s up to all of us.” “Enough already, enough already. This is not acceptable. This police officer shouldn’t be dead at this moment.

Like other American neighborhoods, Milwaukee has long been plagued with gun violence. A Milwaukee Journal Sentinel database shows that 224 individuals were slain in the city in 2017, 197 in 2021, and 190 in 2020, with the majority being shot to death.

From 2017 through 2019, the city experienced fewer than 120 homicides annually.

However, guns remained the weapon of choice, at a rate of almost 80% annually.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, five hundred sixty-nine thousand three hundred thirty people were residing in the city in 2021.
