The city council of the only city in the United States, with a legislature, made up entirely of Muslims, voted to outlaw the flying of Pride flags on any city property.
Leftist protestors are currently organizing a rally against the ban.
Councilman Mohammed Hassan of Hamtramck, Michigan, a community close to Detroit, introduced the consensus bill.
The resolution declares that “the government of the City of Hamtramck does not allow any religious, ethnic, racial, political, or sexual orientation group flags to be flown on the City’s public properties, and that only the American flag and the nations’ flags that represent the international character of our City shall be flown.”
Gracie Cadieux is one of the organizers of this weekend’s Pride demonstration against the flag ban.
Cadieux added that we don’t have to be told that we are the target of this; we can see it clearly.
According to the speaker, the demonstration’s purpose is to “launch Pride 365, a year of civil disobedience, protest, community engagement, and mutual aid here in Hamtramck.”
The LGBTQ+ community is responding to the city flag decision, according to Cadieux, by staging a protest and organizing a full calendar of Pride events.
Amer Ghalib, the mayor of Hamtramck, replied to the complaints in a statement following the city council meeting on Tuesday.
“We are not targeting one group or another,” Ghalib said in the video. “Those people who accuse me of hating them, half of my board of commissions are either LGBTQ or supporters of LGBTQ.”
Ghalib stated, “We treat everyone equally, without discrimination, but also favoritism.” “Those who claimed I hated LGBTQ people should know that half of my boards and commissions are either LGBTQ or support LGBTQ issues. I have never dismissed a member of the LGBTQ community.
Cadieux responded, “The mayor’s a liar, the mayor has been on a tirade about the pride flag and only the pride flag.”
Councilman Hassan chided the plan’s opponents, saying, “You guys are the ones making problems.” Don’t threaten us, please. I am the elected representative. I am doing what most people want because I am striving for that.
Pride month, don’t force it down our throats, said Hassan Aoun, a prominent Muslim community member in Dearborn, Michigan. Gayness can exist on its own. Put [the Pride flag] nowhere on city property.
Records indicate that when it was initially decided to fly the pride flag in Hamtramck in 2021, Mayor Ghalib was against it.
