Naftali Bennett Officially Quits Politics

In a move that was speculated to happen soon, Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett announced on Wednesday he would not run in the upcoming election.

Embittered by the fall of his coalition after many Knesset members turned against his policies and decisions, Bennett has now stepped down as the leader of his Yamina Party and will not be contesting in the next elections that are slated to be held most likely in October.

Replacing his position as leader of the party is his long-time political partner Ayelet Shaked, who has said she would be open to joining Likud leader Benjamin Netanyahu in forming a right-wing government.

Polls conducted by Israeli media have gone to show that Yamina would get five seats if led by Shaked and that Likud would get 34 mandates, Lapid’s Yesh Atid 20, and Gideon Sa’ar’s Tikva Hadasha would barely pass the threshold at 4. Meanwhile, Bezalel Smotrich’s Religious Zionist Party rises to 9 seats in the poll.

Until a new government is in office, Foreign Minister Yair Lapid is to take over from Bennett as head of government, as this rotation had already been in the coalition agreement. Bennett is to remain deputy prime minister for the time being.
