According to his spokesperson, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued an order on Tuesday requiring his office to approve all secret diplomatic meetings in advance.
This came as officials rushed to quell the diplomatic uproar caused by Israel’s disclosure that its top diplomat had met with his counterpart from Libya. Foreign Minister Najla Mangoush of Libya fled to Turkey out of concern for her safety after the discovery of the first-ever known meeting between the Israeli and Libyan foreign ministers sparked irate street rallies in various Libyan cities.
An alternative government in Libya led by Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibah announced that Mangoush had been temporarily removed from her position due to the alleged meeting. Israel has always been the target of unrelenting enmity from Libya.
All government ministries were given the order by Netanyahu on Tuesday, asking them to have his office’s consent before engaging in any secret political negotiations.
Additionally, Netanyahu was required to personally sign off on the publication of news pertaining to such private discussions as part of the directive. Topaz Luk, a Netanyahu advisor, claimed that Netanyahu gave the order in response to the Libya scandal’s repercussions.
It was unknown if Netanyahu was informed in advance of the meeting between Mangoush and Foreign Minister Eli Cohen.
