To prevent tax-deductible donations from supporting Israeli settlements in Judea and Samaria, often known as the West Bank, a new law has been proposed in the state legislature of New York.

Ending New York funding of Israeli settler violence” act was proposed by assemblyman Zohran Mamdani (Queens, New York-District 36), who stated: “What we have is several New York state-registered charities that are sending at least $60 million per year to Israeli settlement organizations that then use that funding to continue the history of expulsion and dispossession of Palestinians in the occupied territories that have been going on for decades.”
Other New York members opposed Mamdani’s bill, who said it was meant to polarize Democrats further.
Additionally, they said that the legislation targeted organizations that care for orphans and victims of terrorism.
Mamdani, who took office in January 2021 at 31, rejected such portrayals of the populations his legislation targets.
These “organizations pose as charities while funding illegal activities,” he claimed.
Mamdani, raised in New York after moving to Kampala, Uganda, when he was seven years old, co-founded the first Students for Justice in Palestine organization at Bowdoin College in Maine, where he received his degree in 2014.
Among the organizations backing the legislation is Jewish Voice for Peace.
