To fully respond to crime incidents fast and without hassle, the New York Police Department has decided to make their handheld radios digital so that criminal elements will not have access to it.
NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea said the use of digital radio is very vital since it will not only deter potential hackers but will also allow the police to easily deactivate missing radios or those radios who will fall into wrong hands.
“We need to know that the criminals don’t know that we are about to be in the crime scene,” Shea said.
Shea is grateful NYPD has given access to such an important piece of information.
He said the press can gain access to their communication by downloading a police scanner app and then get a code that will provide unfiltered access to NYPD communication.
While the NYPD move is laudable it is not happening soon.
