In a sickening incident of antisemitism, a young Jewish football student in Ohio was forced to consume pork as a punishment for missing practice. As a result of this, the high-schoolers football coach and seven of his staff have been suspended for making the child violate his religious Kosher diet.
According to Edward L. Gilbert, an attorney for the boy’s family, on May 20th the 17-year-old Jewish student at McKinley High School in Canton, Ohio, was being disciplined for missing a weight lifting session. Four days after missing practice, Coach Wattley Marcus and other coaching staff presented him with a pizza topped with pepperoni, chosen purportedly because it includes pork and goes against the Jewish religion.
Speaking to local media outlet Cleveland 19 News, Gilbert said, “They order him to go into the gym. He sits in a chair. There is a pizza box on the floor. He picks up the pizza — they tell him he has to, as punishment, eat that whole pizza.” The men were well aware of the child’s religious obligations and yet went forth with punishing him with this vile act.
In response, the Canton City School District released a statement saying it was investigating the incident and would announce its findings soon.
