According to her union, a veteran NYPD captain died of a 9/11-related disease on Sunday’s 21st anniversary of the terrorist attacks.
The Captains Endowment Association said Captain Janelle Sanders died of an undisclosed illness.
“We shall never forget the brave men and women who sacrificed their lives on this awful day twenty-one years ago,” the organization said.
“We lost active Captain Janelle Sanders today due to 9/11 sickness.” “May she find peace.”
Based on police records, Sanders joined the force in March of 2000 and quickly progressed through the ranks. In September 2021, she was promoted to captain.
Sanders was assigned to the 32nd Precinct in Harlem at the time of her death.
