Following last week’s terrible earthquake in Turkey, a married Orlando couple was discovered in one other’s arms in the ruins of their apartment building.
Vasilious “Billy” Poulos, Alex Ilgin’s business partner and longstanding closest friend, told the Orlando Sentinel that Alex and Veronika Ilgin had been married for only seven months and planned to create a family of their own while vacationing with family on Turkey’s Mediterranean coast.
Poulos told WOFL-TV, “Knowing that they were side by side is comfortable.”
The two were among the almost 33,000 people who died in the 7.8-magnitude earthquake and its aftershocks that struck Turkey and Syria on February 6.
There were also four members of a Queens, New York, family that perished.
Rescuers located both the couple and Alex Ilgin’s mother on Thursday. Alex Ilgin’s brother discovered their buried bodies.
In July, they were married.
According to a buddy named Alex Hernandez, Alex Ilgin worked as a mortgage broker, and the couple was about to close on a house. At Orlando Health, Veronika Ilgin worked as a nurse.
Poulos praised the couple for being “simply incredibly lovely.” “Selfless in everything they do. Always prioritize others over yourself.
He started an internet fundraising campaign to raise money for the family and the Turkish earthquake victims.
In addition, a memorial service is set to take place Monday night at a café where Poulos and Ilgin used to meet. The victims will also receive a percentage of those earnings.
They urgently want supplies, according to boots on the ground, Poulos told WFTV-TV. Since Alex and Veronika’s family has lost everything, I must, of course, assist them. However, I also want to provide aid to those in need.
