Two airplanes at JFK Airport nearly collided Friday as one flew into a runway while the other was in the middle of taking off, narrowly avoiding what might have quickly become the deadliest airliner accident to hit the US in decades.
On Friday at 8:45 p.m., a Delta airliner was accelerating down a runway when an American Airlines plane crashed onto the runway, right in its path.
A tragedy was narrowly avoided when the American Airlines pilots accelerated while the Delta pilots slammed on the brakes to make room.
The Delta plane, carrying more than 150 people, stopped less than 1,000 feet from the American Airlines plane.
All passengers were forced off the Delta flight, Flight 1943, as it returned to the gate.
The flight was rescheduled for Saturday, and passengers received complimentary hotel accommodations from the airline.
American Airlines has not yet addressed the incident. The relevant flight, Flight 106 to London, took off on time on Friday and arrived in London at the appointed hour.
