Long Island prosecutors have started an investigation on Rep. George Santos of New York following findings that the beleaguered Republican had lied about his background, education, and professional credentials during the election campaign.
Santos has openly admitted to a vast series of lies, but despite growing concerns about his eligibility to serve in a federal position, he has not yet indicated that he will resign.
Republican Nassau County District Attorney Anne T. Donnelly said, “The multiple fabrications and contradictions linked with Congressman-Elect Santos are nothing short of astonishing.”
She argued that the third district’s citizens in Nassau County and neighboring areas needed an honest and responsible representation in Congress.
“No one is above the law, and we will pursue criminal charges if they were done in this county.”
After being contacted for comment on Wednesday, the Santos campaign did not answer immediately.
He was supposed to take office on Tuesday when the U.S. House meets again.
If he takes office, he might be the subject of inquiries from the Justice Department and the House Committee on Ethics.
The office of the New York attorney general has already stated that it is investigating some of the recently discovered problems.
The Republican has acknowledged that he lied about having Jewish ancestry, a Wall Street pedigree, and a college degree, but he has not yet responded to other lingering questions, such as the source of what appears to be a quickly amassed fortune despite recent financial problems, such as evictions and owing thousands in back rent.
Republican party members have requested that Congress and law enforcement conduct investigations.
Rep.-elect Nick Lalota, a fellow Republican from Long Island, expressed concern over the revelations.
Lalota stated on Tuesday, “I believe a comprehensive inquiry by the House Ethics Committee and, if necessary, criminal enforcement, is warranted.
