Russia has launched an upgraded intercontinental ballistic missile, according to the head of the country’s Roscosmos space agency, which President Vladimir Putin previously claimed would make Russia’s adversaries “think twice.
According to Russian news outlets, agency head Yuri Borisov declared that Sarmat missiles have been assigned to combat service.
There were no other details provided. One of the numerous cutting-edge weapons whose development Putin highlighted in 2018 is the Sarmat. The R-36 ICBMs, sometimes called Satan in NATO reporting, are to be replaced by a silo-based missile that can carry several nuclear warheads.
According to reports, the first launch phase of the Sarmat is brief, giving monitoring systems little opportunity to track it.
Putin said that the Sarmat would “reliably ensure the security of Russia from external threats and make those who, in the heat of aggressive rhetoric, try to threaten our country, think twice” in 2022, roughly two months after sending soldiers into Ukraine.
