Violence during and after Morocco’s shocking 2-0 victory over Belgium at the World Cup required police to use water cannons, tear gas, and perimeter fencing to control crowds.

Numerous rioters lit electric scooters, tipped over and burned a car, and threw bricks at moving vehicles. According to Brussels police spokeswoman Ilse Van de Keere, cops intervened after one person sustained facial injuries.

The mayor of Brussels, Philippe Close, pleaded with citizens to avoid the city’s core and assured them that the police were making every effort to maintain law and order.

On police instructions, even the subway and tram traffic had to be stopped.

Additionally, there were commotions in Antwerp.

According to police in the adjacent Netherlands, rioting broke out in the port city of Rotterdam when riot police tried to disperse 500 soccer fans who were throwing pyrotechnics and broken glass at the police.

Unrest was reported in The Hague and the city’s capital, Amsterdam.

Fans with Moroccan immigrant connections in numerous Belgian communities celebrated Morocco’s triumph, a significant World Cup upset.

How many people were detained during the disturbances was not immediately apparent.
