The Florida governor, who is running for president on the Republican side, acknowledged that his opponent, Donald Trump, lost the 2020 election in a clear-cut manner after years of giving ambiguous responses.
DeSantis stated in an interview with NBC News that was posted on Monday, “Of course he lost. “Joe Biden is in office.
DeSantis has frequently avoided inquiries about whether he thinks the results of the 2020 election were fair. But in recent days, he has begun vocally contesting the false claims about the legitimacy of the election made by Trump and his allies.
There is no solid proof that election fraud altered the results, according to federal, state, and Trump’s own attorney generals. The courts at the time, including the judges he chose, flatly rejected the former president’s accusations.
In the lead-up to the violent riot by his supporters in the U.S., Trump was last week charged by Justice Department special counsel Jack Smith with four felonies in connection with his attempts to invalidate the results of the 2020 election. Senate on January 6, 2021.
DeSantis’ rhetorical turn has occurred as he attempts to revive his stale 2024 presidential campaign. Trump is the early and clear front-runner in the Republican presidential primary for the following year because of his continued high levels of support among the Republican Party base.
When asked specifically if Trump won, DeSantis initially said, “Whoever puts their hand on the Bible on January 20 every four years is the winner,” but when pressed further, he provided a more straightforward response. The governor opposed mail voting and so-called “ballot harvesting,” and he reiterated his reservations about voting procedures for the 2020 election.
However, like other Republicans, he said he would use the procedures he had previously criticized. “We’re also going to do it. We won’t engage in combat while holding one hand behind our backs, DeSantis declared.
