Santos Resigns from House Panels Due to Ethical Concerns

Rep. George Santos of New York, a Republican, informed his fellow Republicans on Tuesday that he is resigning temporarily from his two congressional committees.

This decision was made in the wake of numerous ethical scandals and one day after Santos met with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy.

Santos is the subject of various investigations by prosecutors and has had numerous requests for his resignation due to his campaign and personal finances and false statements about his past and family.

Santos was appointed to the House Committee on Small Business and the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology, two relatively unnoticed panels.

The GOP conference praised the choice, according to Rep. Tom Cole, R-Okla., who added, “I think it was the right thing to do, and I was pleased of him for getting it done.”

McCarthy met with Santos on Monday night but kept quiet about their talk.

McCarthy assured reporters at the Capitol, “You’ll see.

Meanwhile, Santos announced that he would make a statement later. Santos said, “No, I’m not when asked if he was thinking about leaving.”

Republicans characterized Santos’ choice as voluntary. The decision astonished Rep. Roger Williams, chairman of the House Committee on Small Business, who claimed he hadn’t discussed it with Santos.

The bottom line, according to Williams, is that he has decided to stay off committees until his problem has been resolved to his satisfaction.

Santos and McCarthy have come under heavy fire from Democrats for McCarthy’s efforts to remove three Democratic MPs from their committee assignments while also selecting Santos, who has lied so vehemently to his people about his past.

Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., said: “The hypocrisy grabs you by the throat.” This Republican speaker appoints George Santos, a serial forger of every aspect of his existence, to committee seats.

Though they will be free to serve on other committees, McCarthy prevented Schiff and Rep. Eric Swalwell, D-Calif, from being reappointed to the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence.
