Two individuals were detained on Sunday night after a series of mailbox thefts in the Sunset Park neighborhood of Brooklyn.
On 47th St. and 2nd Avenue, several company owners who shared a mailbox discovered that their mail had been tampered with, cheques had vanished, and occasionally they had even been cashed in under different identities.
The perpetrators’ faces and license plates were captured on camera above the mailbox.
There were cameras because Klein’s Naturals, one of the looted shops, has them. Boro Park Shomrim was watching the video, and it immediately called the police and sent out units.
On 65th and 8th Avenue, NYPD officers noticed the suspects and arrested them.
“I’ve had 6 or 7 checks which I was supposed to receive…I was told by the bank or the customer that they were flagged for fraud,” Rosenberg said.
“The postal police were amazed at how swiftly Shomrim could identify the suspects,” Rosenberg added.
Since tampering with mail is a federal felony, Rosenberg also notified the federal Postal police.
According to Rosenberg, the incident emphasizes the value of security cameras.
