A fire at a nightclub in the Cambodian city of Phnom Penh claimed the lives of six individuals, according to a municipal police spokeswoman.

The fire started about 5:00 p.m. local time on Saturday inside a club in the Tuol Kork neighborhood of the city, according to San Sok Seiha, a spokeswoman for the Phnom Penh Municipal Police.

He told Xinhua that “four men and two women were pronounced dead in the fire,” adding that the cause of the fire was being looked into.

According to the National Committee for Disaster Management (NCDM), there were a total of 454 fire accidents in Cambodia in 2022, resulting in the deaths of 42 people and the injuries of 55 others.

The Grand Diamond City hotel and casino in Poipet, a town that shares borders with Thailand, experienced a massive fire on December 28 of last year that left 26 people dead, according to the NCDM.
