Seventeen states’ smaller meat and poultry producers will share $115 million in incentives from the United States.

The Agriculture Department reported on Thursday. The USDA funds are the most recent in a line of honors given by the Biden administration to promote meat and poultry processing, which will help farmers and create more jobs in primarily rural regions.

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said in a statement before a meeting with producers and business owners on Thursday morning in Des Moines that “while American farmers and ranchers have been responding to the demand to produce more, their communities have struggled to see their share of the benefits.

The discussion with Vilsack regarding enhancing and marketing farm and food enterprises was anticipated among the attendees.

The financing comprises 10 grants totaling $77 million that were given to applicants in 12 states as part of a program that supports the opening or growth of meat- and poultry-processing facilities.

As part of the grants, Mountain West Economic Development in Montana will get $15 million to expand slaughterhouse operations in the Flathead Valley, and the Farmers Union Foundation will receive $800,000 to support smaller processors in Minnesota, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.

Five grants totaling $38 million were given by the USDA as part of a program to expand slaughterhouses that will support independent producers in five states.

Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Indiana, Iowa, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, and Wisconsin are among the states where projects are getting money.
