Socialist Assemblywoman Yuh-Line Niou, one of the leading candidates for New York’s 10th Congressional District, which includes Boro Park and where 22% of the population is estimated to be Jewish, is again under fire for anti-Semitism.
In the latest in a long parade of inflammatory incidents, Niou posted an announcement on her Instagram account on Tuesday, August 9, about her August 18 fundraiser at Union Hall. As reported by Forward, the event will include entertainment by five comedians, including Eman El-Husseini, a virulent anti-Israel comedian. El-Husseini uses her social media platform to denounce Israel as ‘a terrorist state’ and ‘worse’ than apartheid’. She has called Israeli Jews “European colonizers” and American Jews offering support to Israel “a cult”. In 2013, she tweeted about Jews controlling the media and Hollywood.
This latest insult follows fast on the heels of Niou publicizing the endorsement of author Sander Hicks, as reported in Forward. Hicks claims Israel orchestrated 9/11.
Nious is also the only one of the twelve candidates for the August 23 Primary who has expressed support for the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement to boycott Israel. Her announcement of her support for BDS caused Working Families Party, Assemblyman Brian Cunningham, to withdraw his endorsement of the assemblywoman as reported by Forward. Cunningham had endorsed Niou’s campaign in May but withdrew his support on Monday, July 11, and instead endorsed Dan Goldman.
According to recent polls, Niou remains one of the top candidates running.
