Over 22 people, including children, were killed when a double-decker boat carrying more than 30 passengers overturned Sunday evening off a beach in southern India, according to officials.

According to police officer Abdul Nazar, the rescue workers anticipate finding other bodies inside the boat after bringing it ashore from the murky seas.

He claimed that members of India’s National Disaster Response Force and the Indian Coast Guard were working to rescue people and search for the missing.

Most of the passengers on the tourist boat were tourists, and it sank close to the Poorappuzha River’s estuary in Tanur, a coastal town in Kerala’s Malappuram district.

According to Nazar, the boat looked to have capsized due to overcrowding, and police were looking into the reason for the disaster.

Children who had come for a ride on the boat during their summer break were among the deceased, Sports Minister V. Abdurahiman told the Press Trust of India news agency, adding that four people had been taken to a hospital in critical condition.

The district’s authorities were asked to monitor the rescue by the state’s chief minister, who tweeted his sympathies to the victims’ families and announced that he would visit the area on Monday.

According to a government declaration, according to PTI, Monday has been designated as a day of formal mourning.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted that he was “pained by the loss of lives” and that the victims’ families would receive compensation.

In India, where many boats are overcrowded and lack proper safety equipment, boating accidents are prevalent.

In the southern state of Andhra Pradesh in September 2020, 12 persons perished when a touring boat capsized on the overflowing Godavari River.

In the same area, a boat capsized in May 2018, and 30 people died.
