
Syria’s capital city was the target of airstrikes late on Sunday that were ascribed to Israel, the first such attacks in nearly a month, according to Syrian official media.
According to state news agency SANA, Syrian air defenses responded to the strikes near Damascus by shooting down several of them.
Only “material damage,” according to the report, was done.
The international airport in the Syrian city of Aleppo in the north was the target of the last alleged Israeli attack on Syria on May 2.
According to state media at the time, the attack resulted in one Syrian soldier’s death and the airport’s closure.
Regarding Sunday’s attacks on Damascus, Israeli authorities made no immediate reaction.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a British-based opposition war monitor, reported that Israeli missiles had targeted installations used by the Syrian government’s allies, the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah and that ambulances had been utilized to transport those injured in the attacks.
According to the watchdog, Israel has launched 17 attacks on Syrian territory since the year’s commencement.
Hundreds of strikes on targets in government-controlled areas of neighboring Syria have been carried out in recent years by Israel, which has sworn to thwart Iranian entrenchment nearby, but it rarely admits them.
Yoav Gallant, Israel’s defense minister, claimed earlier this month during a speech at a security conference that since gaining office late last year, the current Israeli administration has significantly increased the number of strikes on Iranian targets.
Last week, a spokesperson for the Israeli army said in a statement that a drone being used by Israeli forces to monitor Syrian airspace “came under fire by small arms” and that machine gun fire was used in return by Israeli forces.
