Yoav Gallant, Israel’s defense minister, announced that, as part of the “complete siege” he had ordered, authorities would cut electricity to Gaza and bar the entry of food and fuel.
The declaration was made on Monday as Israel’s military hunted for Hamas fighters in the southern part of the nation, defended gaps in its border barrier with tanks, and bombed the Gaza Strip from the air.
Since rival Palestinian factions were overthrown by Hamas in 2007, Israel and Egypt have enforced varying degrees of blockade on Gaza.
