
In response to Hamas attacks on Israel, the European Union stated late Monday that it would swiftly examine its support for the Palestinian Authority, contradicting an earlier statement by an EU commissioner that the EU was suspending it immediately.
Five hours after EU Commissioner Oliver Varhelyi declared that all payments from the development program for Palestinians would be immediately canceled, the European Commission issued a curt statement saying, “There will be no suspension of payments” at this time.
The reason for the reversal was not immediately explained. In a period of extreme geopolitical sensitivity, the reversal of a 691 million euro ($730 million) program marked the end of a humiliating day for the EU executive.
