On Wednesday, Amir Ohana, a member of the Likud Party in the Knesset, was chosen as the incoming government’s nominee for speaker of the house, with Ofir Katz, another party member, being suggested as the next chairman of Prime Minister-designate Benjamin Netanyahu’s coalition in the legislature.
The Knesset speaker is a crucial office whose holder determines which bills are submitted to the plenum for consideration and establishes the government’s legislative agenda.
Once the entire house accepts his appointment, Ohana will effectively serve as the Knesset’s president, represent the body abroad, and step in for President Isaac Herzog when needed.
In 2019, Ohana was appointed as Israel’s first openly homosexual Cabinet minister and subsequently held the positions of justice and public safety.
On Wednesday, Yoav Galant, a former commander of the Israel Defense Forces’ Southern Command, was appointed by Netanyahu to the position of defense minister.
Galant, who once held the position of housing and building minister, was seen to be the best choice. Fruma, his Holocaust survivor mother, was a young passenger aboard the “SS Exodus.”
Michael, his father, was a partisan who fought the Nazis in the forests of Belarus and Ukraine.
Yariv Levin, a longtime ally of Benjamin Netanyahu, is anticipated to be appointed as the new justice minister.
On Thursday, Netanyahu’s administration is expected to be sworn in.
