The Baal Koreh of Rav Aharon Kotler zt”l, Rav Avrohom Tzvi Kushner, passed away, and his passing is mourned by the Torah community.
In 1934, he was born on Manhattan’s east side. “Avrohomele” was profiled as an Ilui in the Yiddish newspaper in 1941, when he was seven years old and already knew the whole Chumash by heart.
According to the report, if you started any pasuk, he would complete it and tell you where the pasuk was. He had an incredible memory and didn’t prepare for any exams. He remembered every detail of all he had learned.
From the time he was a small child until he was nineteen, Reb Avrohom z”l (known to his family as Reb Heshy) studied in the nascent Yeshiva RJJ on the east side. After that, he moved to Lakewood.

Reb Avrohom was a constant presence at the Lakewood Minyan in Boro Park. He was both the Baal Shacharis and the Baal Tokaya there. They were neighbors of the Skoiler Rebbe, who had the custom of presenting a pasuk to a person and then giving a Dvar Torah based on that pasuk. Reb Avrohom mechanized him one day.
He decided to stay because leaving would have been embarrassing. There was a problem, and the Lakewood Minyan was on the verge of calling the police. Reb Avrohom treasured family and made it a point to be present at each family celebration.
He belonged to the generation that served as Yiddishkeit’s binding agent. There was a generation that not only established the Torah culture that exists now in Lakewood but also throughout the world.
