Pope Francis has been requested by the head of the World Jewish Congress to use his moral influence to call for the release of hostages abducted from Israel by Hamas.
During a scheduled encounter with Francis on Thursday at the Vatican, Ronald Lauder made the case.
Lauder was in Rome to open a WJC office that will serve as a conduit to the Holy See. Francis demanded the release of the prisoners and supported Israel’s right to self-defense, but he also expressed concern over the condition of Palestinians in Gaza and the developing “humanitarian catastrophe.”
