The US is requiring new inspections of some jet engines

Pratt & Whitney, a manufacturer of jet engines, is confronted with a new issue.

Because there is a chance that components could malfunction and cause the planes to be damaged while in flight, U.S. regulators are mandating prompt inspections and potential repairs to Pratt & Whitney engines on select Airbus passenger airplanes.

The Federal Aviation Administration announced on Friday that it took action following an additional investigation into an engine failure in December of last year that forced the pilots of an Airbus A320neo to abort takeoff.

The engine parts must undergo ultrasonic tests, according to the FAA, within 30 days.

The regulation takes the place of an order from October directing pilots to get the engines checked during their subsequent shop visits. The new order applies to 202 engines globally and 20 engines on aircraft with US registration.

Pratt must deal with a second, much more serious issue that could force airlines to repair parts made of powder metal that were contaminated during production and force the removal of 1,200 engines from Airbus jets. A division of RTX Corp., which would not comment, is Pratt.
